GreaseFit as a FatSecret alternative
FatSecret is a free calorie counter with a large food database, a community and a free barcode scanner. This page sets out honestly what GreaseFit does differently, and where FatSecret is still ahead.
How this page was checked
Every statement about FatSecret on this page was checked against FatSecret's own website, privacy policy and app store listings on 9 October 2026, and the sources are listed at the bottom. Plans and prices change, so read it as a snapshot from October 2026. Anything we could not confirm on FatSecret's own pages, including whether its free app shows ads, is left out rather than guessed. Everything about GreaseFit is a verified fact.
What you would gain
Water tracking and meal planning, free
As of October 2026, FatSecret's store listings name water tracking and advanced meal planning among its Premium features. In GreaseFit, water logging and meal planning (a day's meals plus a week overview) are free.
Vitamins and minerals, scored for your region
15 vitamins and minerals plus cholesterol and caffeine, free, scored against EU, US, UK or WHO reference intakes rather than one fixed standard.
Your data stored in Amsterdam
FatSecret's privacy policy says its servers are in several locations, including Europe and the United States, and that personal data may be transferred to the US. GreaseFit keeps accounts, logs and photos in Amsterdam under the GDPR; the privacy policy names the few services that handle data outside the EU.
No advertising SDK
There is no ad SDK in the GreaseFit app, so there is nothing to switch on later.
Detailed strength training
Sets with weight, reps and RPE, plus duration, heart rate and time in each heart-rate zone.
What you would give up
The honest other half, about GreaseFit itself.
No FatSecret importer
On the roadmapThere is no FatSecret import. Lose It is the only importer today, so your history stays behind and your regular foods are set up by hand. If you would use a FatSecret importer, contact us.
A much smaller food database
On the roadmapGreaseFit's barcode registry is built from foods people have saved rather than licensed wholesale. Common items are there; obscure ones you add once.
Steps only from Apple Health or Health Connect
On the roadmapNothing else is read and nothing is written back, and there is no Google Fit, so weight or workouts from a watch, ring or scale do not appear.
No watch app or widget
On the roadmapThere is no watch app and no home-screen widget.
No offline logging
On the roadmapA connection is required to log. Your data lives server-side so it follows you between devices.
Where FatSecret is stronger
From FatSecret's own pages, as of October 2026. If these are the reasons you use FatSecret, it may well be the better pick for you.
A far larger food database
FatSecret's website cites 1.9 million verified foods. GreaseFit's registry depends on someone having saved the food first.
Watch app and widget
FatSecret has an Apple Watch app with complications, and its Android listing includes a widget. GreaseFit has neither.
Wider fitness sync
On Android, FatSecret integrates with Google Fit, Samsung Health and Fitbit for exercise. GreaseFit reads daily steps only.
A community, and the web
FatSecret has a community of people tracking alongside you, and you can use it on the web as well as in the app.
Many more languages
FatSecret's App Store listing names 23 languages, German among them. The GreaseFit app is available in five.

How to move from FatSecret
There is no FatSecret importer, so this is manual. Plan one evening, and most of it is adding the foods you eat every week.
- Create a free account and set your macro targets, or run the built-in TDEE calculator for a starting point.
- Pick the reference standard you want your vitamins and minerals scored against: EU, US, UK or WHO.
- Look back over a few weeks in FatSecret and note the foods you log most. For most people that is twenty or thirty items.
- Add those foods once. Custom foods take the full micronutrient set, so copy it from the label while you are at it.
- Scan barcodes as you unpack your shopping. Anything not in the registry you save once, and it stays linked to that barcode.
- Turn on the water, meal and weight reminders you want, and leave the rest off.
Who this is actually for
GreaseFit suits you if you want water tracking, meal planning and vitamins and minerals without a subscription, no advertising SDK, and your data stored in the EU. If FatSecret's huge database, watch app, community or German interface are what you rely on, staying with FatSecret is the honest answer.
