Questions & answers

Straight answers.

The questions people actually email about, answered without marketing varnish, including the ones where the answer is no.

Pricing and accounts

Is GreaseFit really free?

Yes, for the tracking. Logging food, scanning barcodes, tracking macros and micronutrients, building recipes by hand, logging workouts, weight and water: all free, with no card required.

There is an optional paid tier called GreaseFit Supporter. It raises your AI quota from 5 credits a day to 25, and it unlocks the AI recipe scan: photograph a page from a recipe book and the recipe, plus every food in it, gets created for you. Every new account gets 30 days to try that scan. Everything else, the manual recipe builder included, is identical on both plans.

What does a GreaseFit Supporter membership actually get me?

A higher daily AI quota: 25 credits a day instead of 5, shared between AI photo estimates, label scans, recipe scans and AI chat. A label scan costs one credit, so 25 a day. It also unlocks the AI recipe scan, which is a Supporter feature: it costs two credits and creates every food used in the recipe as well. Every new account can use that scan for 30 days without a membership, and building recipes by hand never needs one. A membership also adds priority support and early access to new features.

Mostly it funds the project. GreaseFit has no investors and no advertising revenue, so memberships are the only thing paying for servers and development.

Are there ads?

No. There are no ads and no advertising SDKs in the app at all. Nothing is paid to be featured or recommended, and no product placement is sold.

Do I need an account?

Yes. There is no guest mode; your data lives on the server so it can follow you between devices, and that requires an account.

You can sign up with an email address and password, with Google, or with Apple on iOS.

How do I delete my account and my data?

From inside the app, or from the account deletion page on this website. It removes your account and the data attached to it.

Tracking and features

Does GreaseFit have a barcode scanner?

Yes, and it is free: no subscription, no daily limit, no ad before the result.

Worth understanding how it works: a scan searches GreaseFit's own registry of foods that people have saved and attached barcodes to. If a barcode is not there yet, the app offers to create the food, and from then on that barcode is linked to it permanently. It is not a lookup against a global product database.

Which nutrients does GreaseFit track?

Calories and calories burned; protein, carbohydrates and fat, with fat split into saturated, trans, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated; fiber and sugars.

Then the micronutrients: cholesterol, sodium, potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus and zinc, plus vitamins A, C, B1, B2, B3, B6, B12 and folate. Caffeine is tracked too.

Reference intakes are age- and sex-aware, and you can choose which standard they are scored against: EU (EFSA), US (FDA), UK (SACN) or WHO.

Can I store my own recipes?

Yes. You can create custom foods with a full micronutrient editor, save meals, and build recipes with ingredients and step-by-step instructions, including a photo for each step.

Recipes have a serving count, and the totals are divided across servings when you save, so logging one portion of something you cooked for four is accurate rather than guesswork.

How does the AI food photo estimate work?

You photograph a packaged product, a nutrition label, a plated meal or a page from a recipe book. The estimate pre-fills the food, meal or recipe editor, and it will match against items already in your library rather than creating duplicates.

It is a starting point, not an oracle. Check the numbers and correct them before you save. An estimate from a photo is exactly that.

Photo estimates, label scans, recipe scans and AI chat all draw on one daily pool: 5 credits a day on the free plan, 25 for supporters, reset each calendar day in your own timezone. A label scan costs one credit. A recipe scan costs two, creates every food used in the recipe as well, and is a Supporter feature: new accounts get 30 days to try it. Building recipes by hand stays free for everyone.

Can I log workouts as well as food?

Yes. Workouts are logged as exercises broken into sets, with weight in kilograms, reps and RPE, plus duration, calories burned and notes. If you have heart-rate data you can record average and maximum heart rate and time spent in each zone.

Does it count my steps?

On Android, yes: it reads the device's own step-counter sensor.

On iPhone, not yet. iOS step counting is on the roadmap.

Does GreaseFit have a meal planner?

Not yet. You cannot schedule meals for future dates today, so GreaseFit records what you ate rather than planning what you will eat. A meal planner is on the roadmap.

Can it build a shopping list from my recipes?

Not yet. Shopping lists are not a feature today, but they are on the roadmap.

Does it connect to Apple Health, Google Fit or Health Connect?

Not yet. GreaseFit does not read from or write to any of those platforms today. Health platform integration is on the roadmap.

Switching from another app

How do I import my data from Lose It?

Export your data from Lose It, which arrives as a .zip archive, then upload that zip on the GreaseFit website. The importer runs on the web, not inside the app.

It brings across your custom foods with their nutrition values, your food log entries, weights, steps, exercise logs and water intake. Profile details like birthday, gender and height are filled in only where you have not already set them, and rows you had deleted in Lose It are skipped.

There is a step-by-step walkthrough in the guide to switching from Lose It.

Can I import from MyFitnessPal or Cronometer?

Not yet. Lose It is currently the only supported importer, and more importers are on the roadmap. You can still move across manually in the meantime. Building your twenty or thirty regular foods into your library takes an evening and makes logging faster forever after.

Privacy, security and data

Is my health data encrypted?

In transit, yes. Everything goes over HTTPS, encrypted to modern standards, and passwords are never kept in a readable form.

On the device, Android adds an extra layer of protection to stored credentials. The equivalent hardening on iOS is not in place yet, so it would be dishonest to make a blanket claim across both platforms.

Where is my data stored?

On servers in Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. Your records stay inside the EU and fall under the GDPR.

Is my data sold or shared with advertisers?

No. There is no advertising business here to sell it to. Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics are used to see whether the app is crashing and which screens are used, with advertising-ID collection switched off. There is a toggle in your profile to opt out of usage statistics entirely.

Does GreaseFit work offline?

Not yet. Your data lives on the server, which is what lets it follow you between devices, but it also means you need a connection to log a meal today. Offline logging is on the roadmap.

Devices and languages

Which devices does GreaseFit run on?

iPhone on iOS 15.3 or later, and Android phones on Android 9.0 or later. There is no watch app or home-screen widget yet; both are on the roadmap.

Which languages is GreaseFit available in?

Five, all fully translated rather than machine-generated: English, Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese and French. You can pick one in the app or leave it following your system language.

If yours is missing, get in touch at support@greasefit.com and say which language you would like to see. Requests are what decide which language gets translated next.

Who makes GreaseFit?
