GreaseFit as a MyFitnessPal alternative
If you are here, something about your current tracker has worn thin, usually the ads, the subscription, or the feeling that the app is working for someone else. This page is an honest account of what moving to GreaseFit would actually get you, including the parts where the answer is worse.
A note on fairness
This page does not quote anyone else's prices or feature list. Those change constantly, and a comparison table full of stale claims about a competitor is worth nothing to you. Everything in the left-hand column below is a verified fact about GreaseFit. The right-hand column is the question to go and check in whatever you are using now.
What you would gain
Barcode scanning that stays free
Scanning is the thing people most often find behind a paywall, and it is the single reason this app was written. It is free here, with no daily cap and no ad before the result.
Micronutrients on the free tier
Eight minerals, eight vitamins and caffeine, not just the three macros, and scored against a reference standard you choose: EU (EFSA), US (FDA), UK (SACN) or WHO. That last part matters more than it sounds if you do not live in the United States.
No advertising, structurally
There is no ad SDK in the build. That is a stronger statement than an ad-free tier, because there is nothing to switch back on when a quarterly target is missed.
Your data stays in the EU
Servers are in Amsterdam. Your health records sit under the GDPR rather than being exported somewhere with a weaker regime.
A recipe builder that does the maths
Ingredients and step-by-step instructions, plus a serving count that actually divides the totals, so logging one bowl of a four-portion stew is a real number.
Someone answers the email
Support does not go to a ticket queue. That has obvious limits, but a reply comes from someone who can actually fix it.
What you would give up
Switching costs something. Here is what, so you can weigh it up honestly before you download anything.
No MyFitnessPal importer yet
On the roadmapThere is no support for this import file yet, but you can still upload it with our importer and contact us about the status of the progress. We are actively adding import integrations as files get uploaded.
The food database is smaller
On the roadmapGreaseFit's barcode registry is built from foods people have saved rather than licensed wholesale. Common items are there; obscure ones you add once, and then they are yours permanently.
No integrations
On the roadmapNothing syncs from Apple Health, Google Fit or Health Connect, and there is no watch app or widget. If your scale or ring feeds a health platform, that data will not appear here.
No offline logging
On the roadmapYou need a connection. Data lives server-side so it follows you between devices, but that is the trade.
No meal planner or shopping list
On the roadmapNeither exists. GreaseFit records what you ate rather than planning what you will eat.
Side by side
| GreaseFit | Worth checking in your current app | |
|---|---|---|
| What costs money | Tracking costs nothing. An optional membership raises the daily AI quota from 5 to 25 credits and unlocks the AI recipe scan, free for 30 days on every new account. Recipes you build by hand are free. | Which everyday actions need a subscription: scanning, macros, exporting? |
| Ads | None, and no advertising SDK in the app at all. | Are there ads on the free tier, and can you pay to remove them? |
| Barcode scanning | Free, unlimited. Searches GreaseFit's own registry of saved foods; anything missing you add once. | Is scanning free, or is it a paid feature? Is there a daily limit? |
| Micronutrients | 8 minerals and 8 vitamins plus caffeine, scored against EU, US, UK or WHO reference intakes. | Do you get vitamins and minerals for free, or only calories and macros? |
| Recipe builder | Ingredients, step-by-step instructions with photos, and a serving count that divides totals correctly. | Can you save your own recipes, and does per-serving maths work properly? |
| Workout logging | Sets with weight, reps and RPE, duration, calories, heart rate and time in zone. | How much detail can you record per set? |
| Data location | Servers in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Your records stay in the EU under the GDPR. | Which country holds your health data, and under whose law? |
| Getting your data out | Delete your account and its data from inside the app. | Can you export and delete without emailing support? |
| Who makes it | Independent, based in Amsterdam. No investors, no advertising business. | Who owns the company, and how does it make money from you? |
| Works offline | No, a connection is required to log. | Can you log a meal on a plane? |
| Meal planning | Not a feature. | Do you actually use the planner, or just think you will? |
| Shopping lists | Not a feature. | Same question. |
| Apple Health / Google Fit | No integration. | Does your ring, watch or scale need to sync through one of these? |
How to move across
Without an importer this is manual, but it is one evening and then it is done.
- Create a free account and set your macro targets, or run the built-in TDEE calculator to get a sensible starting point.
- Pick the reference standard you want your vitamins and minerals scored against: EU, US, UK or WHO.
- Spend twenty minutes adding the foods you eat most weeks. For most people that is around thirty items, and it is the single highest-leverage thing you can do.
- Scan the barcodes of what is in your cupboard as you go. Anything not in the registry you save once, and it is attached to that barcode from then on.
- Rebuild your two or three regular recipes with a serving count so portions come out right.
- Turn on only the reminders you want, and switch off the rest.
Who this is actually for
GreaseFit suits someone who logs food most days, cares about what is in it beyond calories, and would rather the app had no commercial interest in their attention. It is a poor fit if you depend on health-platform sync, need to log offline, or want the app to plan your week for you.
Feel your best. Let the app do the rest.
Free to use, no ads, and no credit card. Available on iPhone and Android.
