What's inside

Every feature. No asterisks.

GreaseFit is a nutrition and training log for iPhone and Android. Tracking is free: no paywall on logging, no ad break between meals. A membership raises how many AI credits you get per day and unlocks the AI recipe scan, which every new account can try for 30 days. Building recipes by hand stays free on every plan.

Calorie and macro tracking

The daily basics, done properly. Log what you eat, see calories in and calories burned, and watch protein, carbohydrates and fat land against targets you actually chose.

  • Calories eaten and calories burned, side by side
  • Protein, carbohydrates and fat with per-meal and per-day totals
  • Fats broken out into saturated, trans, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated
  • Fiber and sugars tracked separately from total carbohydrates
  • Macro split presets: Balanced, High protein, Low carb, Keto, or fully custom
  • A built-in TDEE calculator to set a sensible calorie target in the first place

Vitamins and minerals, not just macros

Most free trackers stop at three macros. GreaseFit tracks the micronutrients too, and scores them against a reference standard that matches where you live rather than defaulting to American values.

  • Minerals: sodium, potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc and cholesterol
  • Vitamins: A, C, B1 (thiamin), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B6, B12 and folate
  • Caffeine, tracked like any other intake
  • Age- and sex-aware reference intakes, so the percentages mean something for you
  • Four selectable standards: EU (EFSA), US (FDA), UK (SACN) and WHO

Barcode scanning

Point the camera at a barcode and the food comes straight up. Scanning is free and is not held back behind a subscription.

  • Scanning happens on your device, not on a server
  • Reads EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-E, Code 128, Code 39 and ITF-14
  • A scan looks the barcode up in GreaseFit's own registry of foods people have saved
  • Scan something new and you save it once, and after that the barcode is attached to it for good
  • No paywall, no daily scan limit, no ad before the result

AI photo food estimates

No barcode and no label? Photograph the plate and get a starting estimate you can correct. It is a shortcut for the awkward meals, not a replacement for weighing the food you eat every day.

  • Point the camera at a packaged product, a nutrition label or a plated meal
  • The result pre-fills the food, meal or recipe editor so you can fix it before saving
  • Matches against items already in your library instead of creating duplicates
  • Consults Open Food Facts and USDA data as part of the estimate
  • Free plan: 5 AI credits per day. Supporter: 25 per day
  • Scanning a page from a recipe book is a Supporter feature: it costs 2 credits and creates every food in the recipe. Every new account gets 30 days to try it

AI nutrition chat

Ask a question about what you ate, or describe a meal in words instead of hunting for it. Anything it suggests logging is shown to you first and only saved when you confirm it.

  • Describe a meal in plain language and turn the answer into a log entry
  • Conversation history is kept so you can pick up where you left off
  • Nothing is logged without your confirmation
  • Shares one daily pool with photo estimates: 5 credits a day free, 25 for supporters

Your own food library and recipe builder

The fastest tracker is one that already knows what you eat. Build up your own foods, meals and recipes once, and logging becomes two taps for the rest of the year. Building a recipe by hand is free: ingredients, steps, photos per step and serving counts. Only the AI recipe scan, the shortcut that reads a recipe page for you, needs a membership.

  • Create custom foods, including a full micronutrient editor
  • Save meals: the combinations you eat again and again
  • Build recipes with ingredients and step-by-step instructions, with a photo per step
  • Set a serving count and the totals divide across servings automatically
  • Around 45 serving units: grams, kilograms, ounces, pounds, millilitres, litres, cups (metric and imperial), tablespoons, teaspoons, fluid ounces, pints, quarts, gallons, slices, pieces, cans, jars and scoops
  • Preparation methods: baking, boiling, frying, grilling and the rest
  • Add your own photos to the foods you save

Workout and exercise logging

A training log that records what you actually lifted, not just that you went. Sets, reps, load and effort, with heart-rate detail when you have it.

  • Exercises broken into sets with weight in kilograms, reps and RPE
  • Duration, calories burned and free-text notes per workout
  • Average and maximum heart rate
  • Time spent in each heart-rate zone, in seconds

Weight, water and steps

The everyday numbers, on the same dashboard as your food, so trends are visible without exporting anything.

  • Weight entries, a goal weight, and weight statistics over time
  • Water intake logging
  • Step counting on Android, read from the device's own step-counter sensor
  • A weekly overview card that puts the last seven days in one place
  • Share a day-summary card if you want to show someone

Reminders that you control

Notifications are opt-in and configurable. If you want to be left alone, you will be left alone.

  • Water reminders: hourly, every three hours, or once a day
  • A meal-logging reminder
  • A daily weight reminder
  • Separate opt-in for news and product updates

Import your history from Lose It

Switching trackers usually means starting from zero. It does not have to. Export your data from Lose It, upload the zip on the GreaseFit website, and your history comes with you.

  • Upload your Lose It export as a .zip on greasefit.com; the importer runs on the web, not in the app
  • Brings across custom foods with their nutrition values, including fat, saturated fat, protein, carbohydrates, sugars, fiber, cholesterol and sodium
  • Brings across food log entries, weights, steps, exercise logs and water intake
  • Fills in profile details like birthday, gender and height, but only where you have not already set them
  • Lose It is currently the only importer; there is no MyFitnessPal or Cronometer import yet

Privacy, security and getting your data back

Health data is the most personal category there is. It is treated that way: no advertising, no ad networks, and a delete button that actually deletes.

  • No ads and no advertising SDKs anywhere in the app
  • Everything travels over HTTPS, encrypted in transit to modern standards
  • Passwords are never kept in a readable form
  • Servers are in Amsterdam, so your records stay in the EU
  • Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics are present with advertising-ID collection switched off, and there is an opt-out toggle in your profile
  • Delete your account from inside the app whenever you want

Languages, dark mode and the small stuff

Details that make an app liveable, translated properly rather than run through a machine and shipped.

  • Five fully translated languages: English, Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese and French
  • Dark mode as an explicit choice: System, Light or Dark
  • A Today dashboard with calorie, macro, nutrient, water, weight, workout and weekly-overview cards
  • Requires iOS 15.3 or later, or Android 9.0 or later

What GreaseFit does not do

Every app's feature page is a highlight reel. Here is the other half, so you can decide before you download rather than after.

There is no meal planner

You cannot schedule meals for future days. GreaseFit logs what you ate, not what you intend to eat.

There are no shopping lists

Building a shopping list from your recipes is not a feature today, whatever an older store description may have implied.

It does not work offline

Your data lives on the server, which is what lets it follow you between devices, but it also means you need a connection to log a meal.

It does not connect to Apple Health, Google Fit or Health Connect

Nothing is read from or written to those platforms. Step counting on Android reads the device sensor directly, and on iOS there is no step count at all yet.

An account is required

There is no guest mode. You sign in with an email address, Google, or Apple on iOS.

The AI recipe scan is not on the free plan

Photographing a recipe page and having the recipe and its foods created for you is a GreaseFit Supporter feature. Every new account gets 30 days to use it. Building the same recipe by hand costs nothing and never will.

Barcode scanning searches GreaseFit's own registry

It is not a lookup against a global product database. Common items are already there; anything missing you add once, and it is there for good.
